What Are the Most Common Causes of Knee Pain?

Did you know that knee pain affects around 25% of adults? Yes, this problem is extremely common. It can drain your energy and make it difficult to do everyday tasks, like getting in and out of cars, climbing stairs, cooking, and more.  If you suffer from knee pain, you may naturally wonder what the underlying cause is and how you may be able to find relief with the help of a qualified non-surgical orthopedic doctor. This blog post provides valuable information.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of knee pain. Also known as “wear-and-tear” arthritis, it is a degenerative condition that causes the cartilage in the knees to wear down. This allows the bones to rub against each other, which can be very painful.

While surgical knee replacement is certainly an option in cases of severe osteoarthritis, other options are available for less advanced forms of the condition. For example, viscosupplementation involves injecting a gel-like substance into the knees that acts as an artificial cushion. Or, you might be a candidate for PRP therapy, which can significantly slow cartilage degeneration.

Injuries

Knee injuries are relatively common among both athletes and non-athletes. The knees are complex joints that must put up with a lot of force on a daily basis, so they are prone to soft tissue injuries, such as meniscus and ACL tears. Knee fractures and bursitis (inflammation of small sacs of fluid in the knee joints) can also be culprits behind knee pain.

If you recently fell or twisted your knee, it is important to get the issue checked out, especially if you do not notice improvements with standard home care. A doctor can use ultrasound, X-rays, or other tools to diagnose the problem and provide tailored advice and care. Physical therapy, regenerative medicine injections, and even pain medication could all play a role in your recovery.

Overuse

Overuse injuries deserve a category all to themselves. They can occur if you run or jump a lot or frequently work on your hands and knees. This can strain the knees, cause inflammation, and lead to increased wear and tear.

Of course, you should take precautions to lower the risk of such injuries. Using knee pads when you work on your hands and knees, being moderate in your activities, and strength training could all help. Maintaining a healthy weight is also highly beneficial.

Additionally, you may need professional care to address existing tissue damage. Activity modification, regenerative medicine, and other therapies could all improve mobility and reduce pain levels.

Knee pain is awful! Seek appropriate medical care so a doctor can identify the cause of your discomfort and suggest strategies to help you get moving again.
